Brotherhood Peace Garden

A community-led food growing and nature recovery project, empowering residents to connect with nature, build skills, and strengthen community wellbeing through inclusive green activities.

Support The Brotherhood Peace Garden

The Brotherhood of the Cross and Star launched the 'Brotherhood Peace Garden' project in the second round of the Green Spaces Fund. They've got three new ideas to expand their existing garden.

See the drop down list below for detailed project information, pricing and plans.

Email info@gmet.org.uk if you're interested in funding any of these project ideas.

Project Idea #1: Potting Shed and Food Storage Shed

Funding Required: £850

Summary:
We have already successfully transformed an unused car park into a thriving community-led garden and food growing project, featuring a 25ft polytunnel and 19 raised beds. Feedback from community members highlighted the need for additional all-year-round growing space. In response, we have recently built a potting shed to enable year-round propagation and growing, and a food storage shed to support our community mushroom growing project.

We are seeking funding to insulate both sheds to protect plants and produce from winter frost. The project will directly involve local residents: for example, 12 residents have already expressed interest in taking part in a one-day mushroom growing workshop and plan to use the storage shed to continue growing and share their learning with the wider community.

Resources Needed:
• Rolls of insulation
• 1mm plywood
• Funding to cover labour costs.

Anticipated Measurable Outcomes:
Once the sheds are fully operational, we anticipate engaging approximately 60 community members per month through gardening, mushroom growing sessions, and hands-on workshops. These facilities will enhance year-round community engagement, skills development, and food growing activities.

Project Idea #2: Green Spaces Electrical Supply

Funding Required: £1,900

Summary:
Following the recent development of our potting shed and food storage shed, we are now seeking funding to install an electrical supply that will make these spaces more functional and accessible for year-round community use.

The project requires a certified electrician to run an electricity supply from the main church building to the potting shed, food storage shed, and outdoor communal area. This will enable the installation of two light fittings and four plug sockets, providing essential lighting and access to power for small appliances such as a kettle for community members and volunteers, and a heater to support plant propagation during the colder months.

This installation will greatly enhance the usability of the garden throughout the winter, allowing volunteers and residents to continue engaging in gardening, food growing, and wellbeing activities in a safe, welcoming, and comfortable environment.

Resources Needed:
• Certified Electrician
• Electrical wiring
• Fittings
• Installation materials

Anticipated Measurable Outcomes:
With electricity available across these spaces, we anticipate that approximately 120 community members and volunteers will be supported each month through food growing, learning, and wellbeing activities. This improvement will strengthen community engagement, support biodiversity and nature recovery, and ensure continued access to a safe and inclusive green space all year round.

Project Idea #3: Small Community Orchard

Funding Required: £1,400

Summary:
As part of our wider greening initiative, we want to develop a small community orchard to promote biodiversity, support nature recovery, and provide locally grown fruit for residents and volunteers.

The garden’s central location attracts significant public interest, offering a valuable opportunity to engage new participants and inspire local curiosity about sustainable food growing. Working alongside volunteers and residents, we will plant 10 fruit trees, some directly into the ground and others within newly built raised beds, creating an attractive, productive space that encourages community participation and enhances urban greenery.

Resources Needed:
10 fruit trees (mixed varieties)
• Compost
• Timber for raised beds

Anticipated Measurable Outcomes:
• 10 fruit trees planted within the garden
• Improved biodiversity, increased access to locally grown food
• Strengthened community connection
